How about turning your Xbox 360 into a laptop?

The proposal seems weird, but it was exactly what the "BDrizzle" did. He realized the dream of having one of the major consoles on the market in a very practical and portable version with only 6.3 cm thick.

The cost of turning his Xbox into a gaming laptop-esque apparatus costs about $520, but for laughs and sheer joy of being able to make his fantasy a reality, it must be priceless. “…I did it purely out of a desire for an electronics project… I graduated in 2010 with an MEng in Electronics Engineering, and it is keeping me sane whilst I start the final year of my PhD!” says the creator of this wonderful piece of fun.

Unfortunately, the modified Xbox doesn’t have a built in battery, so it’s not completely portable. According to BDrizzle, “…even the most heavy duty 12V 10Ah Li-Ion battery would only last around an hour max.” Still, the invention makes it much easier to carry the console anywhere and this fine piece of hardware is nothing short of amazing.

Now check some pictures of the extraordinary model:

Oculus Rift - Step inside the game

Do you like virtual reality? Are you a fan of 3D? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then you'll be pleased to know the future looks bright for both of those thanks to virtual reality technology developer Oculus, who recently launched a Kickstarter for its new headset - the "Oculus Rift".

I remember the first virtual reality (VR) game I ever played. You would wear the VR helmet and beat bad guys with special gloves and ankle straps with sensors inside. I loved that game, I wished there were more like it. I would even put on the helmet and pretend I was using it to play other games. It’s pretty sad that people seemed to lose interest in it when the Wii came out and motion control gimmicks became king. But thankfully the team behind the Oculus Rift have still held on to the dream. The Oculus Rift is set to be the most immersive consumer-grade virtual reality system. There’s a good reason why their slogan is "Step inside the game"; when you wear the Rift you aren’t looking at your game, you’re inside it. Its unique way of tracking your vision ensures that your eyes are always full of your game and never off screen.

Oculus Rift is a new VR headset designed specifically for video games that will change the way you think about gaming forever. With an incredibly wide field of view, high resolution display, and ultra-low latency head tracking, the Rift provides a truly immersive experience that allows you to step inside your favorite game and explore new worlds like never before.

Designed for gamers, by gamers.

The Rift takes 3D gaming to the next level. There are a number of VR headsets out there, but none that deliver a truly immersive gaming experience. Most products either lack the technical features required for believable immersion or sit at a very high price-point ($20,000+) reserved for the military or scientific community.

But what about games compatibility? Well, they got the basics covered. Doom 3 is ready to be played on this, dubbed as Doom 3 BFG Edition. The Oculus team is working with many game companies like id Software, Epic Games, Unity, Valve. Once it releases, we expect to see more companies follow suit.

This is what they have to say about this:

  • "What I've got now, is, I honestly think the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen."
          John Carmack, id Software

  • "Needless to say, I'm a believer... We're extremely excited here at Epic Games to get the Unreal Engine integrated with Oculus."
Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director Epic Games

  • "I think this will be the coolest way to experience games in the future. Simply that... that big."
          David Helgason, CEO Unity

  • "I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to program with it and see what we can do.”
          Michael Abrash, Valve

  • "It looks incredibly exciting, if anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that Palmer’s going to do it. So we’d strongly encourage you to support this Kickstarter.”
Gabe Newell, President and Owner Valve

How good it is?

Well, tech specs of the Dev Kit ,according to their Kickstarter page:
  • Head tracking: 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) ultra low latency
  • Field of view: 110 degrees diagonal / 90 degrees horizontal
  • Resolution: 1280×800 (640×800 per eye)
  • Inputs: DVI/HDMI and USB
  • Platforms: PC and mobile
  • Weight: ~0.22 kilograms

Developers, rejoice! The reason being that the SDK version is compatible with Windows,Mac,Linux, iOS. And already the Unity Engine and Unreal Engine support is included in SDK. Thats a huge Bonus!

Xbox 720 Could Use 3D Environments With Next Gen Kinect

Microsoft's R&D division is working on a landmark display technology that will project a full 3D game environment across the walls of player's bedrooms and living areas, a new patent filing shows.

A breakthrough device, known in the patent as an "environmental display", will project 360-degree game worlds across all four walls of a room using advanced projection technology.

Crucially, the device will also boast a 3D depth camera, which it appears can calculate the player's position by emitting infrared light patterns and registering where the player is blocking the signal. This is a similar technique used for Kinect.

But the patent suggests further immersion with the use of Kinect's 3D camera, which can separately calculate the posture and various movements of the player.

It is stated in the patent that the tech will tie into the rumoured Kinect Glasses technology that leaked in June.

Microsoft's shutter 3D glasses are suspected to work with Kinect, with the camera registering where the player is looking by sending signals to the glasses - much in the same way a Wii knows how its remote is positioned using signals sent to the sensor bar.

The possibilities for the combined technologies are unlike anything seen before in interactive entertainment. Players could feasibly fill their rooms with full 360-degree displays, interact with a game world not just on their TV but across the walls around them, and observe 3D holograms within the room through the Kinect Glasses.

The combined devices will, in theory, will provide the most sophisticated tracking data on where the player is standing and looking.

The new patent, unearthed by Patently Apple, quotes the Microsoft document as working on "an immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display."

Microsoft said that "the user may enjoy an immersive 3-D experience using suitable headgear, such as active shutter glasses configured to operate in synchronization with suitable alternate-frame image sequencing at primary display and environmental display."

X720 will have a 6 times better performance of the Xbox 360, real 1080p resolution with full support for 3D.

According to the document, Microsoft position the Xbox 720 as "the only device needed for entertainment in the living room," having the ability to record TV content and unification with Windows 8, which would facilitate the development of applications focused on PC Xbox and Windows Phone.
